Album Covers and Fashion

Piano instructors, take note.

Album Covers and Fashion

The art of album covers is not lost. Fashion is art.

But teachers rarely talk to their students about either.

Students are recording, sharing, uploading videos…and not a single discussion about artwork is uttered during the lessons.

They aren’t separate.

If you peruse Bandcamp or other sites where musicians sell their wares, you will see such an incredible variety of Looks.

If you check out any video from, I don’t know, ever, then you will also note that folks take their clothing quite seriously.

But the only time teachers ever talk to their students about fashion or artwork is two days before a recital.

No.

Let it come up often.

Goth Gurls, Metal Heads, Disco Stars, Rap Artists, Country Twangers, K Pop Doers…

When we talk about diversity, we mean this too.

Look at their shoes. Their hair.

Their album covers.

Their stage set-ups.

Check out their color schemes, textures, movement, shadow, silhouette.

Whether they know the specific names for each, for sure your students are paying attention to those things. Are you?

Thought was put into all of that.

And music affects all of that.

And all of that affects the music.

We teach this.
