The Faculty Handbook

How do you know your students learned what you wanted them to learn?
The process of finding this out is called assessment.
There are three types of assessment: diagnostic, formative, and summative.
Diagnostic assessments are designed to find out what the student knows before you begin. Pre-tests, bell work, and informal questions are examples of diagnostic assessments.
Formative assessments examine what the student knows as you’re moving along in the lesson or unit. Examples of formative assessments are quizzes, homework, and exit tickets.
Summative assessment happens after the learning session. Recitals, portfolios, and final exams are in this category.
Many piano instructors use recitals as the only way to determine if the student has learned, but as you can see, such practices limit the range of assessments to exactly one when there are many from which to choose.
Feel free to expand your assessment tool box to include some of these or others you discover over time.
