Here’s an excerpt:

By the time she was eight, she’d earned a scholarship to Juilliard School, auditioning with Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in C-Sharp Minor. This is significant because a. She played Rachmaninoff at eight, and b. The minimum age for admittance at the time was 16. She made her piano debut at Carnegie Hall.

At 13, she joined her mom’s all women band and toured with them as a professional musician. Her ability to interpret classical pieces as jazz standards helped her stand out, but her technique and skill to perform complex arrangements earned her her reputation.  

At 15, she opened opposite Count Basie’s band. Then, she won a contest, which allowed her to begin her radio show, and, in 1938, she made her Broadway debut in Sing Out the News.

Then she graduated from high school. With honors.
