Dr. Carter G. Woodson was a historian and activist. He was the second Black man to earn a Ph.D. at Harvard (W.E.B. DuBois being the first).
Dr. Carter was emphatic that American history is Black history, but was frustrated to discover that very little had been written. His thesis explored this issue and is the basis for Black History Month.
