Learn. You’ll be happy you did.

Life is short. Play the piano.

Learn. You’ll be happy you did.

Yes, it feels really smooth to be able to sit down at any piano and keyboard anywhere in the world and play a few chords or progressions and have people gasp in amazement.

Yes, it does.

It feels great to be able to sit in a house of worship (almost any of ‘em) and be able to at least follow along and sound like you’ve been there forever.

It feels so comforting to be able to watch the snow fall in winter and play something that goes along with it while sipping hot tea.

That’s what you learn with us. You get the technical stuff—technique, scales, breathing, etc.—so that you can create on your own without worrying about if you’re doing it right. And we teach all this in a way that is accessible to you.

It might take a second to get there. It might not. We don’t usually know until we get started.

For sure though, having played the piano for those in hospice, I’m here to tell you that just about everyone who had piano lessons in their youth regretted stopping.

And as a cancer survivor who is acutely aware of my own time table, I’m so so glad I’ve continued to play and grow with my instrument. It has been the one constant that has given comfort through all of the hills and valleys of my life.

To that end…

We have made room for more students.

Neurodivergent learners. Adult learners. Those who were told they have no rhythm/no ear/no business studying music.

We want the men and women who longed to study but family/business/Life interrupted. We want the theydies and gentlethems who yearn to put vibration to their emotions without having to filter.

We want those who know genius is inside them and want guidance finally instead of boxes. We want the students who simply like to hear the tinkle tinkle of the keys and want to do it on purpose.

You will never sound like [insert Pianist of the Day] or [insert Pianist of Days of Yore]. This is not that kind of company.

You’re going to sound like you.

Unabashedly, affirmatively, joyously, definitely you.

Tina L VanOchten is the founder of The Piano Instructor, where we offer piano lessons, write curriculum for schools, and help classical pianists transition into educators. All students begin with learning the physics behind how sound travels—one of the single most important things in all of music that is almost never taught.

We come to you so that you can learn in the most comfortable environment of all, your home. Your piano will be used for your growth. And your family will bear witness to that growth over time.

All lessons are $60, and all lessons are 30 minutes long.
