Playlists for troubles.

This is what I was listening to as we wait for my mom to get home.

Playlists for troubles.

My mother would be mortified if she knew I was writing about her. She's very private. So, I'll just say she was in the hospital for something scary and now she's leaving but we are still scared.

I need(ed) music to get through this.

Your life playlist is sometimes given to you. It's only later do you (sometimes) realize what you were clinging to listening to as you were afraid or worried or angry or in the midst of strong emotion like that.

I looked at my history:

  • 40 songs written by friends—Soprano Gabriela Crowe, pianist Jesse Thomas Morgan, drummer Brian Ferriby
  • Winton Marsalis Fathertime
  • Thelonious Monk, Blue Monk
  • Bonnie Rait Playlist on Spotify
  • 70s R&B hits on Sirius (many hours)
  • Soul with host Smokey Robinson on Sirius (many hours)
  • Rage Against the Machine, many hours
  • Santana, their entire discography
  • Soundtracks of Beetlejuice, The Big Chill, Pans Labrynth, Scrooged, and Superman 2.

What does it all mean? *shrugs*

I know this—whenever you're writing music and you think, Who even will care, please remember that at least one person you know personally uses music to get through tough times, so at least one person will care about the music you compose.

In fact, the first thing on my list is “music my friends wrote” (see above).

Write and record the thing.
