Please consider your dream tonight.

Friday Frank talk for teachers.

Please consider your dream tonight.

We are all headed here. All of us.

The kicker is we don't know when.

So.

Tonight, as you wind down for the evening, consider The Dream.

The one to which you keep saying, Someday.

Would you please consider doing one small thing to make it real? Can you do one small thing tonight before you go to sleep?

See, it's not like you don't know what The Dream is. You likely know how to approach it. You've lusted over it, about it, around it long enough.

Please do one thing tonight toward your dream.

  • Write the first line to the libretto for the opera.
  • Research the class online while waiting for your tea.
  • Bookmark the page for the workshop and then go back to doomscrolling.
  • Mentally do the budget to see if you can pay for the music clinic.

It's bizarre how fast “someday” becomes someone else saying, of you, “it was their dream to…but they never…it's so sad…”.

Heay-handed tonight, I know.

And just to out a fine-point on this:

It's not like you hit your actuarial marker of the end of your time here and then just stop breathing.

Um, no:

Most acquire (develop?) some form of physical disability as we ascend in age.

So that trip to Italy you’ve been dreaming about? Yeah, I went to Venice and Rome. Let me tell you: Stairs are abundant. Elevators, not so much. Can you do it? What about in a year?

So, tonight, can you check beautiful hotels, just for fun?

See what I mean?

A note about travel:

That part gets harder as we get older. The body is going to wear down, make you hurt, or go kaflooey, if it hasn’t happened already, and most of your soon-to-come ailments will be from left field. Know that, grab your passport and get thee in front of a flight attendant who is serving fizzy beverages as you practice your bon giorno.

Most other things are actually easier as you get older because you have determination, patience, long term vision and a powerful combination of education, talent, and experience. You're not afraid to ask for help, use assistive devices and generally git er done. That's the great part about maturity.

Go get it.

Or, if that's too much, at least start.

Or, if that's too much, at least let yourself believe in the possibility.

Or, if that's too much, let yourself think about what it would be like if somehow you could do this thing.

Each of these steps count toward the acquisition of the dream. Each of these is required. Let yourself do one or more of these. You will notice that most of these steps require no money.

All of this *gestures to previous paragraphs* plus the World Wide Web plus Very Good Mentors can help you achieve most things and on your time line.

Please, please, please consider your dream tonight.

And yes, we most definitely teach this.
