Sound is science and art.

Your body really is a wonderland.

Sound is science and art.

Everything that happens at the piano—every trill, every harmonization, all of it—is initiated by the pianist.

The pianist

A person sits down at the piano. They press a key.

Magic begins. But first the science:

When the key is pressed, a series of levers adjust which allow a felt-tipped hammer to rise. When the key is released, the hammer falls onto (usually) three tightly stretched iron strings. The three strings begin to vibrate and resonate.

The strings’ vibration creates a change in air pressure around the strings. That change in air pressure forms a wave.

All sound waves are longitudinal waves. Science!

The wave makes contact with the eardrum, which also vibrates. This vibration sends a message through the three smallest bones in the body (located in the ear) to the vestibule cochlear nerve to the brain, which recognizes this electrical signal as sound.

We recognize this sound as music if we like the pattern.

All of that happens when a single key is struck.

Think about what happens when multiple keys are pressed in a rhythmic fashion. (We call that a song). Think of all the physics that happens.

Now, consider the fact that your body is a medium for sound. You are quite literally affected by these vibrations.

NOW consider that you get to use this to help others shine. You get to teach this. You get to study this. You get to practice this.

How fortunate!
