Technology Checkpoint

We teach this:

Instructional technology is anything you use to enhance the learning. This includes your musical instruments, your computers, your flash cards and so on.

This is your Technology Checkpoint:

  1. What is the condition of your laptop power cords, your phone's USB chargers, and so on?
  2. Is your piano tuned? (If not, make an appointment.)
  3. When was the last time you deep-cleaned in-between the keys on your piano or keyboard, or cleaned the, uh, keys on your laptop's…keyboard…ok, you get it.
  4. Have you recently cleaned the screens of your phone and your tablets?
  5. Check the bags that lug your equipment. Are there any rips? Are the pockets free of debris and trash? Do the wheels rotate freely or do you need to lubricate them? Do the zippers zip and does the Velcro grab?
  6. Are the passwords for your laptop, desktop, tablet, banking, credit cards, utilities, and emails written down and up-to-date? (I’m intentional when I say “written down”, not just saved in the cloud.)
  7. When was the last time you changed your passwords?
  8. Are important files double-backed up? Are they printed and filed in an accessible area?
  9. Are you missing elements of instruction? Are significant portions of instructional cards like flash cards or music books just gone?
  10. Can you quickly exit the premises in case of emergency? What's your exit plan? Does everyone you work with know what the plan is? When was the last time you practiced it?
  11. If you have cameras, have you updated your memory card? Have you archived whatever you need to archive?

As it happens, this list is a combination of tech care and what-to-do-in-case-of-emergency. It is by no means a complete list, and we certainly aren't trying to “should” on anyone. It's just a starting point.

Feel free to adjust as you see fit.
