The butt dent that is specifically yours.
Clem Fortuna tuned my piano this afternoon and wow it has made a huge difference.
You'd think, as a piano instructor, composer, and all 'round musical gal I'd always keep Lilith (my piano's name is Lilith) tuned.
But sometimes life runs away from you. It happens.
Finally, after too long a delay, I have a working instrument inside the home. The sheer musical ecstasy is very difficult to describe.
It's...
Ok.
It's like this:
Sometimes, I don't want to "practice". I've done the practice, worked on the stuff, got tight on the things. Sometimes I want to turn on some streaming service or the radio or put on an album and play along with the songs.
I can do that even with an out-of-tune piano because I can (sort of) transpose on the fly. But the mental gymnastics required to do that for every single song is absurd and exhausting.
So now I can make a cup of tea and sit down at 2 a.m., turn on some lo fidelity stuff or some Chicago or some Chopin or some Sade or some Santana and play along with it.
That's musical freedom, and when your piano is newly tuned, that musical freedom feeling floods All Of You, every part of you, with certainty and excitement, and that certainty and excitement feel good.
It feels good to have your familiar instrument back in working order, like a leather recliner that has been fixed, one that now reclines and vibrates like new but has the butt dent that is specifically yours.
Let's play!
