The Faculty Handbook

The Faculty Handbook is my actual faculty handbook for The Piano Instructor.

My expertise is helping musicians become effective educators. That's the whole deal.

How?

My teachers and I give you exercises that help you remember how to have fun. This is important to the creative and learning process and opens the mind and heart.

We remind you of your anatomy and physiology, how your brain developed, and the body's phases as we progress from birth to death. This is important so that you know why a student may not be doing what you ask—they literally may not be able to.

You are encouraged to laugh with your colleagues as you share your stories of musicianship. This allows us to help you reframe those stories from educators’ perspectives so that those stories can be added to your lessons to showcase your humor, your humanity and your growth.

We uncover the latest in neuroscience, in pedagogy, and in curriculum and help you delineate why you're using the curriculum you're using. If you write your own curriculum, we help with copyright protection.

We guest teach with you so that we can see in real time how your students receive you. We analyze the process from first contact to sign-up and discover where pedagogy can easily and seamlessly be included.

We talk about the intangibles like what happens if you don't get paid and how is teaching group classes different from one-on-ones. We help prevent conditions like decision fatigue and help teachers avoid common pains like back and shoulder pains. Etiquette tips like “brush your teeth right after lunch just before a lesson” and “make sure you bring water to stay hydrated” are provided.

When musicians decide that they want to take on students, most don't realize all the other stuff that goes with teaching, and musician after musician thinks that they're not good teachers when, really, they just need information.

That's where The Piano Instructor comes in, and we use The Faculty Handbook—my faculty handbook—as a guide.
