Your back

Your back

We sit at our pianos and are told to keep our backs straight.

Ok, so let's learn a little something about our backs.

Your vertebral column—your spine—is what keeps us upright. The vertebral column also protects our spinal cord.

The vertebral column is divided into five parts—cervical curvature, thoracic curvature, lumbar curvature, your sacrum, and your coccyx.

Your spinal cord is the communication path between the brain and the body. According to the National Institute of Health:

The spinal cord sends motor commands from the brain to the body, sends sensory information from the body to the brain, and coordinates reflexes.

There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves:

  • Eight in the cervical
  • Twelve in the thoracic
  • Five in the lumbar
  • Five in the sacrum region
  • One in the coccygeal

The muscles of the back are categorized into superficial, intermediate, and intrinsic (deep) groups.

(These are the deep muscles)

We teach this.
